Inflammatory Arthritis
Inflammatory arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis, is a chronic but relatively uncommon joint disease. It results in joint pain, swelling and stiffness due to inflammation of the tissue in and surrounding a joint.
There are many types of inflammatory arthritis. At OrthoCarolina, we suspect that arthritis may be triggered by an autoimmune response by the body to its own joint tissues. Initial treatment strategies revolve around curtailing the body’s inflammatory response towards the tissues within the joint. When inflammatory arthritis first presents itself, the treatment is typically managed by a rheumatologist. He or she may suggest joint replacement surgery if your pain is not controlled well by medical and exercise strategies. Talk with your OrthoCarolina physician about your best options in the management of inflammatory arthritis.
